Supporting Healthy Ageing Through Resistance Training

There are those who want to take a proactive approach to healthy ageing, to take action before changes in strength, balance, and mobility can begin to affect their everyday life. Strength training led by our specialists helped these clients to build and maintain the physical capacity that supports their body through the changes that can come with age, thus helping to preserve confidence, capability, and independence over time.

Case 01

Avoiding strength lost with old age

Starting Point

With no prior experience with resistance training, Mrs Ee had many different fears about it. Fears like not being strong enough to handle heavy weights and becoming too bulky had made her hesitant to start. However, after caring for her elderly parents and witnessing how they struggled to move around due to the decline in their strength, she decided that she did not want this to be her future and thus could not delay her training any longer.

The Programme

Due to a lack of training prior to starting, Mrs Ee started with simple bodyweight exercises, like bodyweight squats or front elevated push-ups, to build a good foundation of strength. This also helped to ease her into resistance training as the thought of jumping into exercising with weights intimidated her.

Progress and Outcome

After two months of training, she has managed to make impressive progress in her strength. She was able to progress to more difficult versions of bodyweight exercises, like from squats to lunges or from elevated push-ups to knee-on-ground push-ups on the floor, and she has also opened up to the idea of starting to work with weights as she wishes to see more improvements in her strength.

The Next Step

After building a foundation of strength for her, we being to track growth in muscle mass more closely to combat the issue of sarcopenia. Exercises can also be more complex now, meaning that more functional movements can be explored to make sure that the exercises are meaningful to her not just in the future, but in her current daily life as well.

The best time to get stronger was ten years ago. The second best time is now.
