Training for Activities You Love

These are stories about those who want to keep enjoying, or return to, the activities that give their life meaning. The programme develops strength and movement around that particular aim, whether it is travel, a hobby, time with family, or a favourite sport. All so they can continue to take part in their favourite activities with greater confidence.

Case 01

Returning to Jogging

Starting Point

When Alice (aged 69) started with us, she was dealing with an old ankle injury. A torn ligament that has long since been restored but left her with a much weaker ankle, limited in both mobility and strength. This prevented her from the hobby that she loved, running, for what she believed would be the case for the rest of her life.

The Programme

It started simple, balance exercises for a single leg and light banded exercises for the ankle to help restore mobility and strength. As the functionality in her ankle improved, her training started to include more strengthening exercises for the lower body to prepare her for her eventual return to running

Progress and Outcome

After a month, Alice began to see improvements in ankle mobility, where the side with the old injury could move just as well as the other side. She also saw steady improvements in single-leg balance, first 10 seconds, then 20 and in 2 months, she could almost maintain her balance for a whole minute. After three months training with us, she was finally able to start a slow jog without any pain or unsteadiness during her runs.

The Next Step

Her ability to jog without pain or instability in the ankle was only the beginning. Alice still wants to continue to improve her strength so that she can improve the speed and the distance which she runs. Our specialist is now working with her to improve her lower body strength to allow for more stamina and greater speed.

Case 02

Training for Golf

Starting Point

Mr Chua has enjoyed playing golf for over 30 years, it has been his main source of activity and a way to spend time with others. Recently, he had begun to feel his lower back affect his ability to play and it made him question if he could continue with this sport in the future. Our specialists found that he was very tight in the hips and thoracic region and was unable to engage his core properly.

The Programme

His programme focused on improving thoracic and hip mobility through proper stretching and strengthening his core through resistance training. Stretches like the open book stretch and hip flexor stretches became a part of his daily schedule, while sessions included exercises with resistance that mainly target the obliques.

Progress and Outcome

After a month of training, he has seen his thoracic mobility improve. At the start, he wasn't able to complete the movement for a wall open book stretch, but now he is able to do the full movement for the stretch. His ability to engage the core has improved as well.

The Next Step

Once the mobility in both his hip and thoracic region have improved enough to keep up with his golf games, the focus of training would shift towards core, lower body and back strength. All of these muscles help to contribute towards having a better golf swing, so he can maintain his skill for years to come.

The best time to get stronger was ten years ago. The second best time is now.
