Rebuilding Strength for Everyday Life

We have clients who are either returning to strength training after time away or have noticed that daily tasks feel more demanding than they used to. The purpose of their training was to rebuild practical strength and confidence at an appropriate pace, so everyday movement feels more manageable and secure.

Case 01

Finding balance

Starting Point

Gerald (Aged 76) started off very unconfident in walking and most of all, his balance. He was afraid that in his current state, he would suffer from many trips and falls, which he had experienced a few times prior to training

The Programme

In the first month, his training was centred around improving his sense of balance. It started with simple movements like tandem walking and shifting of weight. As he showed more confidence in these simple movement, he progressed to maintaining balance in a single-leg stance.

Progress and Outcome

In the 2 months that Gerald has been consistently training, he has shown great improvements in his balance. From training through simple tasks like tandem walking or weight shifting to being able to maintain his balance on a single leg for 30 seconds. Most importantly, he has gained a greater confidence in his own balance.

The Next Step

With an improved balance, the focus of his training has now shifted to building more strength to help him move about easily. On top of the training for balance, resistance training is being incorporated into his programme. Simple bodyweight movements like sit-to-stands or banded exercises like leg press are being introduced to him so he has not just the balance, but also the strength to go about his everyday life.

The best time to get stronger was ten years ago. The second best time is now.
